What Went Wrong With UW Football

Always thought it was odd HC get really high buyouts (Fickell included) but if they leave a school they only have to pay a fraction of what they would get if they get fired. Never understood why schools don't hold a line saying ok we are going to have to pay you a lot if you leave but you will do the same if you want to go to another school to coach.

Luke Fickell is in his third year and is 15-17 at Wisconsin, a program that didn't post a losing season between 2002 and 2023. Fickell's buyout is sizable at around $25 million, and is a concern sources have brought up. However, unlike with Napier, Fickell would be paid out monthly through 2032. Wisconsin has games with Ohio State and Oregon over the next two weeks ahead of its bye week

They still don't want to pay out....same insiders said he was getting fired Sunday, didn't happen. Honestly, he may get canned, but with that schedule, you might as well do it at the end and make him earn some it... no one is going to fix it this season. You still gather a short list, etc.

yeah that schedule is brutal. nobody is going to get this team to a bowl game with the guys we have.

Exactly, who on this staff do you make the interim coach that would actually inspire the troops or do anything to change the outcome? Might as well ride Fickell until the end (or nearly the end) but then they need to move fast to get a new coach named, a staff assembled, and working that portal by the first week of December.

I wonder if they might wait to December to fire him if they do. I keep seeing if fired before December 1st as the date he gets 25-27 million buyout. Do you wait until after that date to lower the buyout to pay closer to $20 million?
