General:

  • Full pads today.
  • A guy was booted from practice for a fake credential. It said he was a Packers video intern. Thing looked professional and everything. He had a camera and Packers polo. They’d never heard of him.
Injuries: LB Rashan Gary (PUP-Knee), CB Eric Stokes (PUP-Knee/Foot), WR Grant DuBose (NFI-Back)

Not Practicing / Limited: OL David Bakhtiari (Rest), TE Josiah Deguara (Calf), OL Jake Hanson (Elbow)

Offense:

  • WR Dontayvion Wicks back practicing.
  • Melton with a great route vs Nixon but slightly high and dropped.
  • Kraft beats Ford with a nice move but overthrown.
  • Davis and Owens good battle deep incomplete.
  • Reed complete on short out vs Gaines
  • Wicks just broke Thomas ankles holy shit!!!
  • Yosh takes care of Hollins then Elgton blanks Kenny in one on ones.
  • Musgrave catch didn’t see who against.
  • Heath long catch vs SJC
  • Davis win vs Sapp
  • Bonds with a nice route and catch
  • Watson with a step deep vs Jaire but overthrown and incomplete
  • Musgrave with a deep catch vs. AJJ. Won with speed. Good separation. Luke Musgrave is just an unfair matchup in 1-on-1s.
  • Wow play by Reed vs Gaines for a quick come back.
  • Sean Rhyan looks…good? I’ve watched Sean Rhyan in 1v1s in 2 of the 3 days. He’s 8-0 in reps. Beat Colby Wooden three straight times today. Awfully impressive for last year’s third-round pick.
  • Heath beats SJC again.
  • Incomplete deep to Kraft vs Owens
  • Caleb Jones continues to impress me.
  • Myers at C, Tom at RT to start teams. Yosh at LT.
  • Love incomplete rolling left to Musgrave. To start.
  • Two solid reps from Zach Tom vs. Preston Smith. Smothered a spin move against the Packers top edge rusher both times.
  • Toss left to Aaron Jones. Lost his footing. Shaken up & being looked at by trainer.
  • Etling cans the play but ball goes short to melton on the run alert
  • End around to Doubs, works pretty well going right. they stopped the play dead pretty quick for some reason. (Lead blocker was Tyler Davis, whose face is currently covered in blood, which would surely be intimidating.)
  • False start by Telfort. Way too many presnap penalties on offense today.
  • McGough on time & over the middle to Malik Heath for a nice pickup.
  • Jones is fine. Back in for the next Team series. Solid gain on a run up the middle.
  • Tyler Davis working in 12 with Musgrave with ones
  • Love complete short out to Doubs. Not much pace on the ball but easily complete.
  • Love complete to Dillon for about 8. Quay quick to “tackle.”
  • Love fools everyone on a QB Keeper RPO, picks up 10+ to the left. Awesome blocking by Tyler Davis downfield. Gets praise from MLF after the play. Nice pickup.
  • Team period ends with best pass and catch of the day so far, Love threads the needle on a slant to Reed, perfect ball between Gaines & McDuffie.
  • 2:20 on the clock, tie game. Starting on the 35(?) Dillon for 3. Timeout.
  • Love complete to Watson on a little screen outside. Doesn’t go for much as Jonathan Owens is all over it.
  • Dillon with a power run for a first down in a 4 minute offense situation on 3rd down. Offense wins the period with the 1’s.
  • Etling up next, same situation. Two runs by Nichols sets up 3rd & 5 at the 2 MIN warning.
  • Etling rolls left, throws a deep corner to Kraft but barely overthrown. Defense “wins” that one.
  • Ones back on the field. Same 4 minute scenario. Need a first down to win the period. 1st and 10: Jones toss outside for a nice pickup. He may have picked up more in a game but they blew it dead. 2nd & 6.
  • Nice run by Taylor inside. 3rd and 3. Rasul just took the ball and spotted it 2 yards back with nobody noticing. I think they fixed it.
  • Taylor runs hard for 3 inside for a first down. Win for the offense.
  • 2 minute drill Down 7. Own 35. 1st and 10. 1:50 left. 1 timeout. Clifford first.
  • Clifford incomplete screen to Goodson.
  • Melton drop on an inside throw. Would have been about a 5 yard pickup. \
  • Clifford with a dart to Melton over the middle for about 15 who redeems himself for the drop.
  • Goodson on a short crosser.
  • Melton complete on a slant.
  • Goodson takes a short pass and turns on the jets for a huge play and almost td but they call him down at the 8. 0:40 left.
  • Clifford incomplete wide to Heath. Nobody really open.
  • Cox pressure but Clifford finds Wilson stealing deep down the right sideline. Just slightly overthrown or just a drop. Incomplete.
  • 3rd down: Looked like a false start. No call. Clifford I compete to Heath. Great coverage.
  • False start.
  • Clifford finds Tucker Kraft on a 50-50 ball vs. Rudy Ford. Downed at the 1.
  • Clifford to Heath complete on a slant against Valentine for a TD. awesome drive from Clifford. Very fun to watch.
  • Love's turn now.
  • Love to Doubs. Comeback. 12 yards. First down.
  • Love tries to hit Watson over the middle. Quay gets a finger on it. Incomplete.
  • Love puts a deep ball on Watson deep post who had a step on Rasul but he can’t bring it in. Great coverage. Great throw. I’d call it a drop. Third down coming up. Rasul talking mad shit to the offensive sideline.
  • Incomplete to Doubs.
  • 4th & 10 — Love scrambles for 1st. Douglas with an awesome jam on Musgrave.
  • Things getting a little testy. Taylor run inside. Short gain.
  • Melton complete on a slant. Timeout.
  • Complete to Musgrave for 7ish. Clock ticks
  • Complete to Dillon short. Clock ticks.
  • Incomplete to Reed up seam. Owens breaks it up.
  • Love tried to hit Toure. Gave him a decent chance. Looked like AJJ might have got there early. No call. Defense wins.
  • Rasul Douglas was talking so much shit to the offensive sideline during starting defense’s two-minute drill win against starting offense — and getting pretty damn vulgar with it — that Aaron Jones had to come on the field and calm him down.
  • We’ve got a live tackle period for the young guys. Emmanuel Wilson with an awesome freaking run breaking a bunch of tackles. Best run of camp. Fun play.
  • And we’ve got a huge run by Tyler Goodson for a touchdown to follow it up. Explosive run with great speed. Young backs showing up.
  • Bonds with a nice snag across the middle for 14 from McGough. Ford had a nice jump.
  • Telfort’s second false start.
Defense:

  • Valentine pbu vs Toure
  • Jaire great coverage on Watson incomplete.
  • Douglas locked up Doubs on a quick out.
  • Wyatt just put Runyan in the spin cycle for a win. Runyan wins the second rep.
  • Leavit pick off tipped pass.
  • Great coverage by Nixon on Melton
  • Valentine another win vs Toure
  • Ballentine great jam on Watts
  • Melton finally beats Nixon with a nice route.
  • Douglas another really good rep against Doubs. Tried a little in & out double move. Douglas didn’t waste a step. All over it.
  • Valentine goes 3/3 vs Toure.
  • Ford and Owens with the starters at safety.
  • Love scrambles. Nice read by Quay to stop for minimal gain.
  • Brooks and Wooden with immediate pressure for a would be sack on Etling. Those two have really made an impression.
  • SJC nice read on an intended flare pass, Clifford has to keep for no gain.
  • McGough with an ugly attempt down field. That ball didn’t look right.
  • Jimmy Phillips has made a couple plays lately. Nice stop at the line there.
  • Karl Brooks with another dominant rep inside. He’s really impressive.
  • Love pressures immediately. Would have been a sack by an unblocked Enagbare. Looked Like Davis may have missed the assignment. Love throws away after.
  • Karl Brooks in the backfield again. That’s at least 3 times today.
  • Odumegwu holds his own and sets a nice edge. Nice run stop.
  • Wooden pressure. Tariq drops a pick from McGough.
Special Teams:

  • Carlson hits from 53 and 60 with room to spare on air before practice.
  • Carlson misses from 41L wide right but good from 43R and 35L on next two.
  • Carlson misses from 47. Made 49. Crushed 54. 4/6 today. 16/27 in camp now.
  • Pat O’Donnell booming some punts today. 60+ yards.
  • While they have an erratic kicker at the moment, the Packers have two legit punters.

Interviews:

LaFleur
Presser:

  • HC Matt LaFleur on splitting reps at center between Josh Myers and Zach Tom: "Josh has done a really good job, but we need more consistency."
  • LaFleur says he expects to have a "featured back" in each preseason game to help determine RB depth chart behind Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. Might give third RB candidates a full half to work each week.
  • Matt LaFleur says he's pleased with the defensive line, especially TJ Slaton and Johnathan Ford. He says both young DL have "upped their game" in camp.
  • Here's one thing LaFleur wants from the offense: "When we get the play out, I want to see more tempo to the line of scrimmage. Been a little too sluggish -- way too sluggish - out of the huddle."

especially since it takes the packers so long to get the play in from the sidelines.

Concerning that the offense has not beaten the defense yet.

Was it taking long to get it in or was that ML just covering for Rodgers sitting there letting the clock go down to nothing so he could try to read the defense until the last second.

talking about the time it takes to get the play in so they can call it in the huddle, not the time spent at the line.

Yeah that's what I am saying ML last year took blame for having to burn TO's saying it was on him taking to long to call in the plays as it can be long winded and not leaving time for the QB to make the reads at the line. Just saying is that true or do the plays really come in quick and ML was just making it up saying the plays are long and take time to call in.

Doubt this will be an issue this year as I anticipate Love will run what's called and try to play have the options of the called play beat the defense rather than trying to beat the defense with his reads at the line.

* And, last year and year's before, why wouldn't a team rely on one of it's qbs best skills - reading the defense, confusing the defense, and adjusting the offense. yes, it was very frustrating at times, but, still, the guy no longer with us was great / very good at it, and any team would have used that skill.

I see some good things coming out of camp in relation to the offense. Based on the info we get, there are some big time plays being made, and there are times that Love, and Clifford both seem to be threading the needle with "must have" passes. It starts here, and can develop through preseason. The objective is to be ready for the opening game of the regular season.

It's refreshing seeing that a handful of guys on offense are showing 2nd year growth in their play. And especially nice to hear how some of our front seven hopefuls on defense are beginning to step up, and we all know it's needed. It's a good sign.

What's somewhat distressing is that the secondary seems to be a bit erratic at times. Depth might be an issue. But, it's early, so we'll have to see how it plays out.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm just glad this season is beginning. I hate months without football!
