Since Jordy Nelson first underwent hip surgery this offseason, the Green Bay Packers receiver has been focused on making a full recovery in time for training camp.
With camp a little more than a month away, everything seems to be going according to plan.
The Pro Bowl receiver was back practicing with the rest of his teammates during Wednesday's open session of organized team activities. He participated in receiver drills before sitting out during the team period with Jeff Janis taking his place with the first-team offense.
"It's going great," said Nelson, who practiced for the first time in Tuesday's closed practice. "We're right where we want to be. We haven't set exact targets but what I wanted to get done, we're getting done. We have another couple days here and another week and then we'll be doing good."
Because of his surgery, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Nelson was in Green Bay "more than any other player this offseason." An hour later in the locker room, Nelson joked that's "not a good thing" because his presence was injury-related.
Nelson, who turned 30 on May 31, said he worked with the training staff "pretty much five days a week" for the last few months to be ready for the offseason program.
"I think Jordy's going to be fine once we get to training camp," McCarthy said. "Just the amount of work he's put into his rehab, he's been on time the whole time, which is all part of the plan how he's being handled these first couple weeks and how he'll be handled next week."
Nelson looked no worse for wear last season. He started all 18 games (including playoffs) and hauled in a career-high 98 passes for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season to earn his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
He has been stretching with the team and doing some exercises inside the Hutson Center during the first two practice open to the public, but otherwise had been serving as another assistant coach, holding practice sheets and directing the younger receivers on the roster.
The biggest thing for Nelson is making sure he's completely healthy when he finally returns to the field in a full capacity.
"That's what you want to be," Nelson said. "The important stuff is training camp, so it's nice to get the script and be out there and take the mental reps and help the young guys out, so I'll be ready and sharp mentally and by the time training camp comes we'll be ready to go."
Fellow receiver Jared Abbrederis was back in the team periods of practice for the first time since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament last August. Outside linebacker James Vaughters practiced with the Packers for the first time, but his former Stanford teammate Ty Montgomery still hasn't arrived because of the school's quarter system.
Cornerback Casey Hayward (foot), outside linebacker Nick Perry, defensive lineman Josh Boyd and tight end Justin Perillo attended practice, but didn't participate. Outside linebackers Julius Peppers and Mike Neal, cornerback Sam Shields, and receiver Adrian Coxson didn't appear.

Should be full go by camp and having Abby back just makes us deeper in camp. thumbsup
