LaFleur Bets on Barry Despite Late-Season Asterisks

I thought that's kinda what we're using and abusing now.

why would you think that......based on ??
That was what they talked about when hiring Barry. Dude had some passing familiarity with it. Talked about it with more depth than other guys they interviewed. Or so they said.

Can't find where they were ever connected? Actually cut his teeth under Monte Kiffin and the Tampa 2 style.

Barry and LaFleur worked together during their overlapping time with the Los Angeles Rams, where LaFleur coached quarterbacks in 2017 and Barry had been the assistant head coach/linebackers coach from 2017-2020.

Barry had recently gone to the Los Angeles Chargers as linebackers coach and defensive passing game coordinator under new Chargers coach Brandon Staley, who was the Rams' defensive coordinator this past season.

This will be Barry's third turn as an NFL defensive coordinator, having held that job with in Detroit (2007-08) and Washington (2015-16). The high-energy Barry is known for preferring an aggressive style of defense, although he didn't always have the personnel to do that in either Detroit or Washington, where those defenses ranked between 28th and 32nd in the league based on yards allowed during his tenures. Washington was 17th and 18th in points allowed under Barry as coordinator.

Barry runs a 3-4 defense. He was in Washington when it drafted Preston Smith. Outside linebackers Smith and Za'Darius Smith, defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback Jaire Alexander and safety Darnell Savage give Barry the starting point for a defensive unit that he did not have at his previous stops.

“He’s downhill,” said the source, who was critical of former coordinator Mike Pettine’s approach against Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady in the NFC Championship Game.

In 2007 and 2008 with the Detroit Lions, Barry’s defenses finished 32nd in yards and points allowed both seasons. One of his top players was linebacker Paris Lenon. Lenon started a total of 16 games in four seasons with the Packers but all 32 games for Barry while recording a total of 240 tackles.

Barry played his college ball at USC. As a senior in 1993, he started seven games at inside linebacker. His father, Mike Barry, coached the offensive line at USC from 1993 through 1997 and also with the Detroit Lions during his son’s stint as defensive coordinator.

The Barry-Fangio thing comes from the fact that Barry coached LBs under Brandon Staley, who was a Fangio guy. Some of the GB beat guys took that to mean that ML wanted to run that system and thought Barry would have picked it up working under Staley and therefore could teach it.

Leonard's defense did a similar thing but in a different way iirc. Matt made statements to the effect that they always had problems against the Fangio system.

With all due respect that's an opinion piece by Tom and his thoughts on why he hired him, RP is correct in part but I read several other thoughts that said he wanted the Rams defensive scheme. It's all speculation really.
