With star sophomore captain Luke Kunin off to the NHL and assistant captain Grant Besse graduating, a new Wisconsin Badgers hockey captain was sure to be on deck for the 2017-18 season.
According to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal, head coach Tony Granato has chosen senior Cameron Hughes to lead this team next year.

Hughes is certainly a veteran for this team, having played in 102 games over his first three years in the program. Last season, Hughes was a major cog in UW’s increased offensive production. He was fifth on the team in scoring, pouring in 32 points on seven goals and 25 assists.
Wisconsin trusted Hughes from the start, making 29 appearances in his freshman season and pacing all freshman scorers with three goals and 12 points. He then put up 25 points (5 goals and 20 assists) in the 2015-16 season.
Hughes has racked up 70 points in his career — coming on 15 goals and 55 assists.
Alternate captains have yet to be named, but Hughes also has NHL potential as a fifth-round draft pick in the 2015 draft by the Boston Bruins.
UW will kick off its official 2017-18 season with a Big Ten series against an Ohio State Buckeyes squad that made the NCAA tournament this past season. Ohio State fell in the opening round 3-2 in overtime to regional No. 1 seed Minnesota-Duluth.
Wisconsin narrowly missed out on the NCAA tournament and will welcome Granato’s first full recruiting class in to the fold.
