We begin our countdown of our Packers’ roster ranking today, but we suggest look at players 88 through 81 as the ones with the most potential for upward mobility.
With less than three weeks to go until the start of training camp, the Green Bay Packers are enjoying the midpoint of their downtime. Minicamp wrapped up 19 days ago, while the team’s players are due to report in 20 days.
We at Acme Packing Company have no off time during this break, and one of the ways we will fill it is by ranking the Packers’ roster. The 90-man roster currently has only 88 players on it, but five APC writers have ranked the players from #1 to #88. We have combined the rankings into a master list, and we will present that list to you in sections over the next few days.
Keep in mind that this list is not necessarily reflective of who we think will make the 53-man roster, but rather how we think the payers rank against each other at the present time. There will be five weeks of training camp for these players to shuffle around and to prove that they either deserve a roster spot or a starting role over a player ahead of them on our current list.
Without further ado, here are players 88 through 81.
88: C Jacob Flores
Flores was signed by the Packers as one of their first batch of undrafted free agents this spring following the 2016 NFL Draft. However, the Dartmouth alumnus sits far back on the depth chart at center, which is one of the deeper positions on the team.
87: TE Casey Pierce
Pierce is in his second year out of college but spent all of 2015 on the Lions’ practice squad after making it to the last day of roster cuts. He was waived shortly after the 2016 NFL Draft, and he signed his contract with the Packers following a rookie minicamp tryout. Pierce did have a decent senior year for Kent State in 2014, with 60 receptions for 641 yards, and he had a decent Pro Day (4.77 40, 6.97 cone) but has not yet stood out among the Packers’ tight ends.
T-85: G Lucas Patrick
Patrick is one of the most recently-signed Packers, inking his deal on June 1st. The Duke guard came and went in rookie camp without a contract, but apparently the team saw enough from him to bring him back in place of guard Cory Tucker, who was also a minicamp invitee and who spent a little short of a month in Green Bay.
T-85: FB Alstevis Squirewell
From Newberry College (which will always be mentioned in conjunction with Brandon Bostick), Squirewell is continuing to re-learn the fullback position after playing defensive line for much of his collegiate career.
84: CB Randall Jette
Jette likely ranks as the lowest undrafted free agent DB because of his tangible skills; his athletic performance at his Pro Day lagged behind that of the other rookie corners, Makinton Dorleant and Josh Hawkins. However, his ball skills (nine career interceptions in college) and bigger frame (5’11”, 193) give him plenty of opportunity to make up for those perceived deficiencies in training camp.
83: OT Josh James
From little-known Carroll College in Montana, James was one of the Packers’ early undrafted free agents, but he dominated the competition in the NAIA’s Frontier Conference. He’ll have an uphill battle to make the team, with the two starting tackles entrenched and a handful of talented backups ahead of him.
82: S Jermaine Whitehead
Whitehead spent a brief few weeks on the Ravens’ 53-man roster late last season, after being poached away from the 49ers’ practice squad. He was released in mid-May, however, and the Packers scooped him up a few days later. Whitehead is one of the smallest safeties on the team at 5’11” and 195 pounds, but he has some solid numbers from the 2015 Scouting Combine to fall back on (4.59 40, 6.95 cone, 37” vertical).
81: RB Brandon Burks
One of the players pushing John Crockett for the third-string running back job is Burks, the small, quick Troy runner. At a shade under 5’9” and nearly 210 pounds, he’s a little bowling ball who racked up over 2,000 rushing yards and nearly 3,000 total yards of offense in college.
