Our View: Just wow…a look at his senior season tape is enough to make you realize there’s something special to Lyle’s game. In fact, it also makes you wonder why he isn’t valued higher in the recruiting services.

Some question his height at 6-1, but here is the reality — Paul Chryst knows just how to get a “short” quarterback to maximize his potential. Proof is in Russell Wilson’s one year in Madison. Of course, we aren’t saying Lyles is the next Wilson, we’re just pointing out that sometimes height isn’t the biggest deal at quarterback.

While height isn’t all that important, what is important is decision making and arm strength. Seeing tape doesn’t always give a great look at arm strength, but the number of pump fakes and immediate bombs suggest there’s plenty of arm there. There’s little questioning his decision making either, as he finished his high school career with 83 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions over the last two seasons.

Can Lyles become the next long-term starter at Wisconsin? With Bart Houston likely to take the reigns for his last season in Madison this year, it could come down to a battle between Lyles and Alex Hornibrook come 2017. If he doesn’t win that job it could be a long wait for a starting position at all.

We’ll just say this — we’re impressed by what we’ve seen on film and if that player progresses under Chryst’s tutelage UW could have itself another sleeper at quarterback.
