The 2018 Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting class isn’t likely to be one with large numbers. However, the limited space is certainly filling up fast.

After nailing down five commitments since national signing day, the Badgers have started off March with commitment No. 7. On Tuesday, 3-star offensive lineman Michael Furtney Milan, MI (Milan) gave is verbal commitment to the Badgers.

UW has been selective in the players added along the offensive line in this class, but Furtney was one of the highest priorities on the offensive line for the coaching staff.

There was some trepidation as in-state school Michigan State pulled the trigger on an offer. However, after a fifth unofficial visit to Madison on Monday, Furtney made the announcement.

He is the No. 53 offensive tackle in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Furtney also is the No. 676 ranked player in the country and the No. 16 ranked player in the state of Michigan.

UW has had trouble getting its foot in the door in the state of Michigan in the past, but it appears that a lot of the hard work has begun to pay off. Furtney is the second player out of the state to verbally pledge to the Badgers in this class and join safety Scott Nelson as three players from the state in the last two classes overall.

The Badgers class continues to rank as the No. 3 class in the Big Ten while coming in at No. 11 so far in the 247Sports national rankings. UW is about half-full in a class that should see no more than 13 or 14 players get full scholarships come national signing day.
