What We Learned — Week 15, by Mark Wellner

The Green Bay Packers traveled west to Oakland and the Black Hole to face the Oakland Raiders. Green Bay looked to continue their win streak against the Raiders. Here’s what we learned.

What We learned…

We learned Jeff Janis isn’t quite ready for offense. He had two big errors that cost the Packers 14 points. Janis dropped a pass that could have been a touchdown. The second error was not fighting for the ball on Aaron Rodgers’ interception. Most of the blame should go on Rodgers for the pick, if Janis fights for that ball it might not have been an interception.

Wonder why Janis isn't ready? The fade away here was an interesting decision. #Packers https://t.co/y4kYwyZ8Xz

We learned that Randall and Rollins are really good. Randall did get beat by Amari Cooper several times but he played admirably against the Alabama product. Randall recorded his third pick and first career defensive touchdown. Rollins played well against Michael Crabtree. The future is bright for the Packers first two picks.

We learned that Julius Peppers still has it. Peppers recorded 2.5 sacks and 3 quarterback hits to go along with 4 tackles. Peppers harassed Derek Carr all day it seemed.

We learned Jared Abbrederis needs more snaps. Abbrederis was very good today in his time, grabbing three balls for 33 yards on three targets. Abbrederis had some clutch catches when it seems the rest of the wideouts had some bad drops.

We learned that Green Bay’s special teams are no longer a weakness. While the Packers did get pinned inside their own 10 several times and had a field goal blocked the punt coverage from Jeff Janis was tremendous. Janis had a huge return in the second half to give the offense a chance to score.

We Learned that Green Bay has been in the playoffs 15 of the last 20 seasons and seven straight. Given what has happened throughout this season is amazing this team is 10-4 and still has a lot of work to do. Mike McCarthy and the rest of the coaching staff should be given a lot of credit (though they certainly take some of the blame for underperformance as well).

What We Think We Learned…

We think that the offense’s issue is execution. Far too many mental issues and drops in this game. Arizona will make Green Bay pay for those next week. The Packers need these mistakes fixed.

We think that the Packers need a big weapon on offense. Losing Jordy Nelson has hurt the Packers and it appears Janis isn’t quite ready. Having a tall wideout or tight end should help. Cue the return of Andrew Quarless?

What We Hope Isn’t true.

We hope David Bahktiari’s injury is not serious. The Packers can ill-afford a loss of a offensive linemen.

We hope Sam Shields isn’t out against Arizona. Arizona has several weapons on offense and the Packers need all hands on deck. Hopefully he passes concussion protocol soon.
