Top 5 in passing yardage. He's just two behind the lead in TD passes. He's tied for the top in passes completed over 20 yards. He's in the top group for pass completions over 40 yards. His passer rating is actually around what his career average is, but that's not good enough to be in top 10. The fact is, defenses are crumbling under passing onslaughts by a lot of teams. It appears ML recognized this, and instilled a better array of options for the Raiders game, and it worked.
Martinez is leading the entire NFL in tackles. Obviously he's doing the job they asked him to do. He's not out there to run with the wide outs, or even most of the backs out in the flat, or TEs. His job is to make those tackles that are there because our front three absorbs blockers.
Sometimes what we see isn't exactly what it is. No matter how well you play defense, there are going to be plays where you have mismatches, and some of them will end up pitting slower LBs on a speed burner, but that doesn't mean the LB isn't a solid player. It's just that the design of the play, and how it was disguised, put the defenders in that position. The Raiders game was a perfect example.
When you look a little closer at the stats our guys are putting up, you can see why they're doing as well as they are. They're getting the points they need, when they need them.
A word of caution. We may think the Bears are imploding, but you better look at the stats being put up by their defense. They're playing awesome. The only thing that gave us that win against them was the fact that their offense is stuck in park. If they get it running smoothly, they're going to be a tough team to beat next time around, and could put up a decent string of wins along the way.
As they say, "It ain't over til the fat lady sings!"
