Restricted Free Agency: How Much for Tonyan?

Probably pretty Capt Obvious, but isn't a lot of the love for Tonyan merely the string of previous losers at the position?
Even Richard Rodgers had one decent season. 58 catches, 510 yards, 8TDs. Tonyan is better, he’s more athletic, he’s a good fit for the offense but I need another season out of him before we talk locking him up, and I’d rather run the risk of a higher contract vs paying for a projection like Lane Taylor or Dean Lowry.

probably.
but here's the thing. he has been working out with kittle - one of the best tight ends in the nfl. who's to say that this has not resulted in his sudden emergence in 2020? who's to say that he's already reached his ceiling? is letting a player go just as he's starting to reach is potential a great idea?

i get that. that's why i think we should put a first round tender on him. if someone wants him bad enough to give us a first round pick, i'm all in on that. a second round tender doesn't save much money.

I think a 2nd round tender no one is giving that up for Tonyan as he right now has not shown he's a complete TE yet.

I've heard this before on Packer players.... we then sign them to big deals and they end up sucking and eating up space we can't afford. Offer him a fair deal but don't overpay...if he can find someone to overpay then so be it.

Well, if Tonyan was sincere and meant what he said in his “open letter” to Packer Nation, maybe he’s willing to work with the Packers to make something happen that benefits everyone.

Also I think many Packer fans tend to overvalue their own players to the rest of the NFL. I don't think Tonyan is going to have people kicking down his door to sign him.

okay, then 2nd round tender i guess. we can always match if the contract offer is reasonable i guess.

I would do that. To be honest I would not complain to get a 2nd round pick if some team decided to overpay for Tonyan. Though with how many teams have limited cap space If I am Tonyan I likely sign my RFA tender right away go to FA in 2022 when the cap goes up and more people have cap space to spend.

Before we get too deep into the how much is too much to pay Tonyan, the question we might ask is how much it would cost to replace him with a free agent? What are the salaries commanded by TEs as of this year?

This chart might help everyone decide just what he's probably worth to the Packers this year, and possibly beyond. When I see guys like Jimmy Graham at $8 mill, and Jared Cook at $7.5 mill, I think a lot of people might be undervaluing the going price of a decent TE in the league.

We got lucky getting Tonyan as a free agent. It don't happen that often.
