RB Jones back to Pack?

I think Pack’s comparing the types of RB’s was that Zeke is an every down work horse but Jones can’t handle that kind of work load
out of the 31 games elliot played in over the past two seasons, he played 80% or fewer of the offensive snaps in 17 of those games. he's not an every down workhorse. he has had games where he plays 81-99% of the offensive snaps, but it's not even half of the total games.

to be clear, i am not saying that aaron jones is an every down work horse either. i think he is best used on a team where he shares snaps with another running back (like he does with the packers).

Let me say this much on Jones, he's a guy that if you look back I mocked to GB. However he was built for MM run game offense to a T, he did really well in the style change that ML brought in. He does need another back to spot him carries as Pack mentions above which kind of devalues him a bit.

Can he be replaced? Yes, 100% yes and there are some 4th and 5th round backs that can do it as well. I think and GBP4 said is weeks ago you let him see what his value is in the market and go from there.... if someone like Miami throws obscene amounts of cash at him then you move on..if not you could do something reasonable. It's a wait and see game.

I am 100% that we can't go into a bidding war with any of the top 15 low-cap teams on any one player.

Packers will draft a quick speeder back day 3 fo the NFL draft. They will pair him with Dillon's more power running style. It's just business folks and it's better to spend money elsewhere then a RB.

And actually Jones is replaceable. Not just because of production but he’s not built for more than 15 carries per game. He can’t take the pounding

i guess we will see how replaceable he is because the packers would be fools to give him a huge contract. it would cost the team too much in other areas. i am nothing but a realist when it comes to this.

sure we can replace him. i'm not debating that. but just don't expect to see the same kinds of numbers. we can sort of see how replaceable he is by looking at all the running backs who had a similar number of carries in 2020. aaron jones had 201 carries (a little over 14 per game, which is right in line with what pack said).

if we look at running backs who had between 190 and 215 carries, we should be able to see how easy it is to replace jones. the only other running back who equalled jones with a similar number of carries was chubb.

you can see the stats here: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2020/rushing.htm

Packers need a Tyler Ervin type replacement for Jones.

Someone who can spell/change of pace for Dillon as well as threaten as a receiver and who can return kicks.

That would be the ideal replacement.

Jones is gone. Count on it. They drafted his replacement last year, and are ready to move with it. They also know they can get somebody in the middle rounds who can play a smaller part in the backfield. Also, there's going to be FAs out there who they can afford. Too many needs, not enough money. They'll look to keep us solid at TE, and may look for O-line help when the salary cap cuts are made. A free agent or two that are willing to work for less than the big guys.

This is not going to be an exciting period of time. Even the draft may seem a little puzzling to us. I actually believe they may trade down to get less costly picks, and more bodies.

EDIT: I am totally flabbergasted by this move. The Packers sign Jones to a 4-year deal, when there's no money, and so many needs. I can only guess that they have a plan on contracts like Rodgers, where they're going to extend him, and give him a huge chunk of money down the road. They appear to be heading for a situation where there could be cap hell in the future!

Will be interesting to see how much of a role Dillon gets in the offense if it's like Williams he might get 6-8 carries a game and a couple passes his way a game. Even then if Deguara is back that number could go down more. Right now it seems we used a 2nd round pick that could ahve been used to try to draft a starting player on a backup RB that could see very limited action.

Jones averages around 15 carries/game.
Over the last 3 yrs Williams averaged around 10 carries/game.
I wouldn’t expect that ratio to change much with Dillon as the #2 RB.
Packers will try to protect the investment in Jones. They really have no choice now that this deal is done.
One thing that we may see more of in 2021 is both Jones and Dillon on the field together, like they did for a few plays against the LAR’s in the playoffs. Might be an interesting twist.
Until we see the contract details it won’t be possible to get a bigger picture of how this will affect the rest of free agency and the draft.
I wasn’t pleased about this deal being made, but I’m hoping to take lemons and make lemonade.

Key will be Jones health. If Jones is healthy Dillon's snaps will be very limited for rushing I think in the 5-8 a game range. But Jones has not proven he can last a whole season so it's likely Dillon will see 2-3 games a year where Jones is dinged up and out and is the starting back for that game.
