Mike McCarthy on OTA's, Scott Tolzien, the O-Line, Year 2 jump

On the next step for Tolzien... I think he's definitely done that. He had three outstanding throws in the 2-minute. He's taking that step in the OTA practice environment, He'll continue to work like he always has. At the end, the preseason games, that's when you want to see a quarterback take a jump.
On seeing what he wants in OTA... Our OTA's are going well. The flow has been excellent. We haven't taken a step backward. You have to learn how to practice --- you're doing new things. Some periods change; you never stay the same. I thought in the first week, we got off to a really good start. Two more this week and then minicamp next week. To this point, I feel really good about the work and the quality fo work. Will take next Friday to review and make sure our young players are ready to go for training camp.
On Brett Hundley... He's doing well. The last two days, he's taken a step. Missed some time out in L.A. He's soaking everything in he can. Working with Aaron and Scott's been a big help. I think he's off to a good start.
On team not adding any free agents... Part of it is philosophy, part opportunity, part evaluation. This is the path that we use and stay on. Gives you confidence. We feel good about the 90 guys we have here but continue to evaluate on the 90-man roster.
On retaining his own veterans (like Cobb, Bulaga)... Our players like playing in Green Bay for a number of different reasons. No. 1, it's the Packers. Tradition. Resources. They see the opportunity to improve every single day. At the end of the day, they want to win a championship. Number of factors.
On Jeff Janis.... Jeff is developing. He's getting a lot of opportunities. He's done some good things on special teams. Some things specific to his skill level, he's good at. Some things he needs to improve on. He's catching the ball better. He can get better fundamentally. Jeff is really improving; gotten a lot of quality work.
On Nelson's recovery ... Jordy's going to be fine. The work he's putting into rehab, this is all part of the training on how we're handling it.
On the O-LIne... I think the offensive line is going to be better. That's why you practice. The continuity those guys have in the room, we're having a heck of an off-season in the O-Line room.
On starting fast this year... It's an emphasis. This will be an emphasis. The adjustments will be minor and more to the effect of the approach. It's June. What's going to happen between now and that first game, I have a good idea how we'll approach that.
On Year 1 to Year 2 jump... You think about these young men out of college, go through training, the whole process, workouts and the ultimately the draft, minicamp and thrown into May/June environment. There's a lot of learning. From their senior year through their first year is an overload of experience. Once you can step away from it and learn everything from A, B, C... Year 1, they're trying to keep their head above water. Year 2, they're learning what they're doing and what the guy across from them is doing and that's when players improve.

He backed off on the kid from last week. A lot of fluff in these pressers. But still nice to see some news.

bh) not to sound negative but this time of year it's all the same canned response. Let's hurry and get into camp. pc)

On another Packer forum I visit daily someone posted a report on what he saw when he attended the OTAs this week. He said Tolzien could really sling it and looked great. ch(

To be fair Pugger Tolzien always looks good in practice, looked sharp last year. Put him in a game vs pressure and multi look defense podo(:(

Yep anyone can look great in shorts. Tolzien likes to hear footsteps and makes bad throws when reading a defense. Guy has been in NFL for years if you can't read a defense by now you never will.

Former Badgers quarterback spent last season revamping his throwing mechanics

I like MM really do but comments like this wideeye)) ...FA has nothing to do with confidence coach it's about making your roster better and deeper. bh(

That's completely not normal for MM, you were 1 game away from the SB don't screw with a system that got you there. If I have one fear this year it's that GB has too many new cooks in the kitchen. tc(

The coaches must see something in him to allow Flynn to walk. Flynn doesn't have Tolzien's arm but knew the offense inside and out and had success in it in the past. We'll know if Scott has really made decent strides when he plays in preseason games this summer. I just found it encouraging to hear positive reports about him.
