Ex-Saints DE Will Smith killed; wife shot after traffic accident

NEW ORLEANS -- Former Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot to death in New Orleans' Lower Garden District on Saturday night following a traffic collision, the coroner's office confirmed.
Smith, 34, was shot after exchanging words with the driver of a Hummer H2 that rear-ended his Mercedes G63 SUV, causing him to strike another vehicle, police said.
Will Smith was a Pro Bowler in 2006 and ranks fourth in Saints history with 67.5 career sacks.
Smith was shot multiple times, and his wife, Racquel, also 34, was shot twice in the right leg, according to police. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was taken to a hospital.
Police said the 30-year-old driver of the Hummer was in custody and being interviewed, and that the handgun used in the shooting had been recovered.
The Saints also confirmed Smith's death, with a spokesman tweeting a statement:
Former Saints running back Pierre Thomas was on the scene shortly after the incident and reportedly had been out with Smith and his wife.
Smith was drafted by the Saints with the 18th overall pick in 2004 out of Ohio State. He spent all nine of his seasons with the Saints and last played in 2012. He was a Pro Bowler in 2006 and ranks fourth in Saints history with 67.5 career sacks. He had a career-high 13 during the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl season.

looks like it was just a little fender-bender. hardly anything at all. the guy who shot him is almost as big as the car he was driving.

More coming out lawyer claims the shooter was victim of hit and run and was following Smith who he said hit him first and there is a video that appears to show this. Also said that there was a loaded gun found in Smith's car which Smith according to the shooter claimed to have had on him. This is becoming more interesting.

hit-and-run is a little misleading. but here is the video.

Not really more interesting. Some guy who wanted to be all tough shot a guy and his wife in a car over a traffic dispute. Unless Smith had the gun out and pointed at this guy he's going to jail for a while. We all know you can get away with anything by claiming self defense. So of course his lawyer is going to pump this angle hard.

Guess there is a witness who heard both claim they had a gun while they argued before the shooting. Big thing is did Smith have the gun in hand and did he have it showing out the window before the shooting.

According to the shooters lawyer and the guy in the car with him.... We will see what transpires at trial. But anything Hayes or his lawyer says right now is suspect ....

Usually the louder the lawyers to more suspect I become. They are really pumping these angles hard in the court of public opinion. Will see at trial when everything comes out if it all holds up.

In that video is the SUV that hit the back of the hummer Smith's?

That first "crash" was barely a nudge. Probably didn't even leave much of a scratch. This whole situation is so senseless. The guy could have got the license plate of Smith's car and reported to police. Smith would still be alive, the guy wouldn't be looking at jail time.
