Dougherty: Probing Packers' practice plan

Like the author says, comparing these things is not an exact science. But the numbers seem to indicate the injury excuse is a little overblown last couple seasons....

In ‘15, they ranked Nos. 24 in games lost and 23 in quality (i.e., three-quarters of the league had worse injury problems). And last season they were Nos. 10 and 19 (i.e., about in the middle of the pack).

Did they do a comparison of those injuries by position. I don't recall any teams losing every CB or every RB at the same time. At one point the Packers lost Randall Rollins and Shields all at the same time and there was a game or two where there wasn't a true RB on the roster. Last year it was WRs. Remember finishing the Arizona game with Jones, Janis and Abredaris

The formula takes into account the importance of the player and such... it's an inexact science though...

Nice. Been saying the last couple years we've been about league average with injuries. Doesn't seem that way if you're not following other teams closely but it's true. Injuries - save maybe losing Jordy in 2015 - have not been all that terrible on average. Problem has been lack of depth on the roster and crummy coaching which amplified the effect of those injuries compared to other teams.

Players will always get nicked up and slowed down. That's a given, it will never change. If the GM and coach refuse to take that into account when building the roster then you can't go back and use it as an excuse later.

How does a GM build a roster that accounts for 3 starting CBs getting injured at the same time or all of your RBs injured at the same time. I would say losing Shields was at least as bad as losing Nelson last year. Not saying its an excuse but it was reality.

You make a trade, you find someone on the street to replace these players or give a boost elsewhere and you adjust your scheme to compensate. MM did the latter on O admirably, in D was a complete fail as TT sat on his hands.
