Jeff Hafley is close to landing the Dolphins gig and is considered a finalist in Atlanta if Stefanski falls through. So who would we get to replace him?

First and strongest is promoting Demarcus Covington to that position; he's a hot name, and the scheme stays the same. 90% chance that is the move MLF makes.

The first two names being floated are Raheem Morris, who is a friend of MLF and would also be someone he could bounce things off of...long shot in my eyes, but he's a great D, awful HC.

Defensive Identity: Aggressive man coverage • Takeaways • Technique High floor. Immediate impact. Some questions about full-unit coordination — but massive upside. Player-friendly leader

Jimmy Leonhard, they came close before, and that hire instantly makes the hometown fans jump onboard. Very aggressive defense, sometimes gives up big chunks, but makes up for it with big plays. Loves to blitz. Player-friendly leader

Morris can run both schemes, while JL is a pure 34 guy.

A couple of other names.....

Gus Bradley, Niners asst HC defense, former DC for the Colts, Chargers, and Seahawks, as well as Jax HC. Runs a 43 D. I like this option a lot. A native of Zumbrota, MN, Bradley played collegiately at North Dakota State... midwest guy.

Also, Johnny Holland, a former Packer on the Niners staff, would be interesting.

Jim Schwartz is available from the Browns...his scheme, which is more multiple, is a fit as well.
He doesn’t chase turnovers; he ends drives. His units dominate third down, create constant pressure with four, and force offenses off the field.

Signature results:

• Elite third-down and three-and-out rates

• Dominant defensive lines (Eagles, Browns)

• Playoff-caliber units across eras

Not flashy — but brutally effective.

Good post Mark!

In order what I think happens if Hafley leaves.

1. Covington is promoted. Easiest thing for ML to do without shaking things up.

2. Raheem Morris is promoted. ML is friends with him and ML has hired many coaches in past who he's had a connection in some way with.

3. Brian Flores runs a 3-4 but is very aggressive in his defense and GB could use that

I see some people saying Al Harris but I think that's just a fan homer pick. Has zero connection to ML and I don't think ML is bringing anyone from the Bears on to be his DC.

Edit:

Another name see now Jon Gannon former AZ HC and Eagles DC. Would his scheme fit?

but i do think we want to shake things up. what we've been doing isn't working. i'd prefer someone from outside like schwartz or morris or bradley.
Question is how much change ML likes. If he wants to stay the same Covington is his guy. If he's willing to go outside the box even a little bit then yeah Morris would be best hire.

I gotta be honest, I'm not sure exactly what our scheme is right now. Hafley had these guys doing different stuff, he was maybe trying to get whatever he could out of them but LVN for example was playing standing up at times. Obviously Parsons was moved around a bunch. What was our bread and butter coverage scheme? Maybe there's no such thing any more? I don't want to engage in too much navel gazing about talent versus coaching but clearly they're linked.

still a 4-3 base... he couldn't play anything he wanted because of injuries and shitty DB play. Again, when you're limited by talent, it's really hard to evaluate coaching and scheme.

Thats not me making excuses thats just reality.
