Sure, Green Bay has four players at the safety spot already, but they know the roster's status, and Ted Thompson often identifies roster needs a year in advance.
It's finally here. NFL Draft week has arrived, and with it the last few days of speculation before the event kicks off on Thursday night.
After this week, there will be no more mock drafts (at least until next Monday, when analysts will undoubtedly put out their way-too-early 2017 mock drafts). We'll finally be analyzing a group of 15-20 rookies (including undrafted free agents) instead of trying to wrap our heads around 300-plus possible candidates. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers' front office will begin sending invites out for rookie minicamp and getting this yer's rookie crop to Wisconsin to begin their NFL careers.
One position which is quietly a need for the Packers is safety. It's not critical for 2016 - the team has both starters entrenched and two backups in place - but with expiring contracts and the use of a hybrid safety/linebacker being a possibility, it would not be a shock to see the Packers use a fairly early draft pick on the position. Ted is certainly trying to keep the band together, denying Eliot Wolf, Brian Gutekunst, and Alonzo Highsmith the opportunity to interview for big jobs elsewhere. Bob McGinn speculates that the new job titles for Wolf and Gutekunst might be a "way of making it up" to those two for those decisions.

Players like Su'a Cravens or Miles Killebrew might be the player the Packers need in the middle of the field in the dime package. They could draft one of these players on day two with that role in mind and not feel a need to upgrade the inside linebacker position for base downs.
