2024 Badger Football Thread

First off I now know that 99.9% of people including most here don't understand the Air Raid offense and or Longo's version of it, the fact they stayed in 12 most of the night is staying vanilla early and not showing your hand. They used 20% of the playbook last night..maybe. The drops didn't help the passing game so thats an issue.

Defense is interesting, they have to do a better job on the DL because they got manhandled a lot. I thought schematically it was solid, a ton of 4-2-5 and more straight-up 4-3 looks.

Fairly typical game 1. Let's see how they look next week before losing it
Love your technical analysis. I do.

But, There is no sugar coating last night. If we didn't get lucky with that punt hitting a Western Michigan guy and us recovering, Wisconsin was going to get beat.

You are absolutely correct. Western Michigan's offensive line pummeled Wisconsin's defense. Bucky was very lucky last night.

I don't care if they only used 20% of the playbook. They didn't do it very well. Unfortunately, it's same old Bucky - lots of fun to have a beer with but not much else.

Sorry, but that's doom and gloom..if they finish off 3 of those drives it's 41-14 and you're on here all kinds of giddy, was it perfect? Hell no, but it's not a complete shit show either.
Your expectations are way out there, it's not 1996 anymore and NCAA FB at the Power 5 level isn't what it was. You can hate that but the reality is Keg there is no going back to those days of old in this format.

My reality was hoping to get into the 12.

I'm not seeing it. I'll still be watching and hoping. Yesterday, brought me back down to earth. Most years, I get through the non-conference on a relative high.

Sorry to be gloom and doom, but it is what it is. They didn't finish those drives. They gave Western Michigan life and hope. Remember, Wisconsin wasn't the only team that didn't finish. We got lucky at home against a team we should have had 2d and 3d string playing by mid 3d quarter.

I think Coach Fick and Coach Longo are better than good. I just don't think our guys can do what they're telling them.

And, holy cow, our defense and special teams sure seem to get fooled a lot.

I'm a little worried that this is all they've got. It's pretty much what we saw for all of last year. They have trouble running the ball into heavy boxes. Van Dyke was supposed to be more of a downfield threat as a passer, but I don't know that he threw more than 15yds downfield all night. This is starting to feel like a Longo issue . . . we'll see over the next few games.

Also a little worried about their run defense. Again, same problem as last year. If they don't improve, there are some better teams that are going to put up 200+ yard rushing days. YPA wasn't bad, but there were too many "easy" runs that teams like 'Bama and Oregon will turn into 20+ yd chunk plays.
my thought watching the game was that the offense was quite vanilla. I think the announcers even mentioned at some point about them not showing everything, so they wouldn't be giving 'Bama tape on their full playbook.
The thing is here they weren't perfect, but they survived the game and hopefully use this experience knowing what they need to get better at.

I get that, and I agree, but you don't need to open up the whole playbook to just take a few more deep shots or scheme some things open to loosen up the defense. They only averaged 5(ish) yds per attempt. I admit I wasn't watching completely focused because family stuff was getting in the way at times, but at times it looked like the old Chryst days of having to run into 8 man boxes all night. Maybe they just really don't have the WR's to force teams to play their safeties deeper. I also have a legitimate question on whether all the 12 looks were by choice, or by needing the extra blockers to run the ball. I admit I don't understand the nuances of the Longo offense, but I watched a couple of North Carolina games and I don't remember it being this dink and dunk.

As for the defense, they are playing small with undersized edge guys, so it seems like at times WMU seemed to get o-line to the 2nd level too easily. That will cost you against teams with more dynamic runners.

I'm not writing off the season at all. I'm glad they found a way to overcome and win. I still think they can win 7-8 games if they can get better every week, but I am a little concerned with what I'm seeing. Hopefully this was truly just a first game thing and they adjust and improve.

When we think about South Dakota playing it tight against the Badgers, we might think about Notre Dame being whacked by Northern Illinois, and Penn State barely sneaked by Bowling Green. The quality in DI, at all levels, is improving, despite the highest rated of all are getting even more talented.

in case you missed game #2 vs south dakota, here's the highlights:

Watched the game don't think there was much highlights in that game they stunk and let SD hang around until the 4th.
Bama is going to smoke them.

Even if they played better against South Dakota, they're gonna get smoked by Alabama, unless they pull a rabbit out of a hat.
