Practice Starts at: 11 AM CDT
General:
  • Just shoulder pads today.
  • Practice was delayed 45 min, starts at 11 AM now.
  • NFL Films mic’d up Matt LaFleur for practice today.
Not Practicing: RB Aaron Jones (Hamstring tightness), CB Kevin King (Hamstring), OL Bryan Bulaga (Rest Day)
Injuries: Matt LaFleur (Achilles-pretty serious), CB Josh Jackson (Foot-not serious-NFI), LB Kendall Donnerson (Hamstring), DL Fadol Brown (Calf), RB Jamaal Williams(Hamstring), OL Jason Spriggs (Trapezius), LB Greg Roberts (PUP)

Offense:
  • RT Cole Madison has had a few high snaps at center but he’s working on it. Snapping pre practice to Elgton Jenkins now.
  • Aaron Jones (hamstring) still out but is working with the Jugs machine.
  • Doesn't look like Bulaga is practicing today either.
  • Receivers working on their releases at the line of scrimmage. Best routes: Adams, Allison, Shep, T. Davis, J. Davis.
  • Bad leg and all, Matt LaFleur just demonstrated to Manny Wilkins how he wants his footwork to look. Planted right on the bad leg. Playing through pain!
  • Davante Adams was visibly upset with himself after he missed a sideline throw from Aaron Rodgers. Goes right back out there and makes the next catch.
  • Tra Carson gets the initial rep at RB with the 1s. Rodgers takes four reps and has different RB for each one - Carson, Vitale, Johnson, and then D Williams
  • Danny Vitale runs route of the backfield and catches pass from Rodgers in the seam for a big gain.
  • Dexter Williams drop.
  • Elgton Jenkins taking snaps at LG with the ones! Lane Taylor with the 2s.
  • Nice jet sweet to MVS, well blocked and well executed.
  • Beautiful and I mean beautiful deep ball from Rodgers to MVS up the sideline. Big 40+ yard pass and catch. MVS beat Tony Brown. Big roar from the crowd. That ball was insane from 12. Would have been a TD.
  • Trevor Davis finds himself wide open on a crossser off play action. Nice gain.
  • Cole Madison just snapped the ball over Manny Wilkins. Again. Will Redmond on the corner blitz scoops it up and would have had a touchdown easily.
  • Offense not on the same page and needed to re-huddle. Wilkins at QB. Lazard was having trouble getting lined up it seemed.
  • Lane Taylor back with 1s .
  • Vitale with a monster blitz pickup.
  • Kizer inaccurate to Moore. Oren Burks frustrated he tipped his blitz to Kizer pre snap.
  • Boyle’s turn, throws low & incomplete to Lazard.
  • DeShone Kizer still struggling. On left out route to J’Mon Moore, Kizer was way early. Threw well before Moore broke. Also threw out of bounds rolling left to open Robert Tonyan.
Defense:
  • Kevin King not in shoulder pads today, might not be practicing.
  • Gary and Gilbert drilling zone drops
  • Tony Brown gets the start at CB with King out.
  • Za’Darius just schooled Alex Light.
  • UDFA Kabion Ento getting a look on 2nd team
  • Rashan Gary & Reggie Gilbert converge on Dexter Williams. Strong push up front.
  • Rashan Gary just blew by de Beer in a millisecond for a quick sack. He’s a freak.
  • Rashan Gary just blew up his 2nd play in a row. This time a big run stop. de Beer vs Gary isn’t fair.
  • Brady Sheldon with his biggest play of camp as he shoots through the line for a tfl. Run game continues to be a major issue for the offense.
  • Chandon Sullivan continues a very impressive camp with a pass breakup against Allen Lazard.
  • Reggie Gilbert getting some first-team reps for Preston Smith. Lining up opposite Z Smith.
  • Alex Light is having some issues with Za’Darius Smith thus far in team.
  • With Darnell Savage finally cleared for team work, he's in at deep safety next to Adrian Amos. Raven Greene, who had worked at safety with Savage out, now moves closer to the line as the dime inside backer.
  • We have an injury as LB Randy Ramsey is down and can’t get off the field. Comes up limping. Looked like it was his left leg. Randy Ramsey has returned.
  • Little worried about Preston Smith. Was waking a little gimpy and haven’t seen him back in.
  • Big nickel look with Greene, Savage, Amos.
  • Gary vs. Bakhtiari and finds it’s not quite so easy against 69 as it is de Beer and Light.
  • Now Rashan Gary works inside, drops back and deflects a pass from Aaron Rodgers almost picks it.
  • Amos shoots thorough for a sack on a blitz. Completed to Kumerow well after the play was “dead.”
  • Defense dominating in 3rd round drills. Pettine is unleashing a series of creative blitzes that the offense has not handled well. Oren Burks comes clean for a would be sack.
  • Ty Summers continues his strong play. Should have probably had the pick vs Kizer who had all day and threw right into coverage targeting Kumerow. His struggles continue.
  • Josh Jones drops late and comes untouched for what would have been a sack of Kizer. Great pre-snap timing by Jones.
  • First-team D got good pressure on Aaron Rodgers with its 3-OLB look on third-down still: Z Smith, Rashan Gary, Kyler Fackrell.
  • Jamerson w/ a blitz/sack. Boyle throws anyway with a nice pass to Malik Taylor on an out, Rouse rips it out.
Special Teams:
  • Josh Jackson (foot) still out, but he just sprinted into practice and now he’s fielding punts for fun.
  • Curtis Bolton knows his path to the team is via special teams. Just had a rough rep on blocking drills and knew it. Was pissed at himself after.
  • Mason Crosby is in cleats, pads and a helmet for the first time in camp.
  • JK Scott 6 punts vs rush: 45 yards, 3.75 seconds | 36, 4.53 | 45, 4.72 | 49, 4.40 | 44, 4.52 | 55, 4.99 | Avg: 45.6, 4.48

Scoop and Score
Coach Bakhtiari just spent some serious time coaching up Alex Light and going through his technique in pass pro.
Practice has ended at: 12:18 PM 1 hrs 18 min
Next event is: Training Camp: Joint Practice with Texans (8/5) at 10:15 AM CDT
Press Conference Notes:
  • LaFleur says he doesn’t think Kevin King’s hamstring injury is related to the same injury last season: “It’s just one of those things. We’ll know a little more in the next couple days.”
  • HC Matt LaFleur said Crosby is indeed good to go.
  • LaFleur said the defense brought it today. Counted 10 to 1 against the offense unofficially.
  • Short practice today by design with Texans coming to town, LaFleur says. He’s tried to avoid three hard days in a row.
  • Tomorrow’s practice against the Texans is set to last 2 hours and 15 minutes. No receiver-DB one-on-ones. A lot of team activities. LaFleur said they’ll taper off a little bit on Tuesday.
  • LaFleur really pleased with Z Smith: “He’s everything we thought he was going to be.”
  • LaFleur asked who stood out to him at family night practice. He highlights WR Trevor Davis and RG Billy Turner.

  • Za’Darius just schooled Alex Light.
  • Rashan Gary just blew by de Beer in a millisecond for a quick sack. He’s a freak.
This hear two guys who are 1s playig with guys who might not even be on the PS.

It's been like that all camp. Gary is getting all kinds of praise but the OT are missing... whiffing blocks. I want to see him take rps vs the Texans Start OT this week then let's talk.

I am worried about King. If this is a major hamstring injury, he will be out all preseason.
It is getting to the point of ridiculous with him.

Kizer better be cut. He sounds horribly inaccurate and we are talking about practice here. We will see what happens in preseason.

They gambled on King with the medical and looks like they lost. He appears to be one of those guys whose body can't stand up to the rigors of football. Stinks for him, and for us.

As for Gary - I look at training camp the same way I look at baseball. You can't just nitpick one play here and there, or even make a judgment off of one practice. You have to look at it weekly and see what the general themes and trends are.

In Gary's case, I think the theme is, he's shown himself to be a freakish athlete with the ability to make plays consistently against 2nd and 3rd team players. That's it right now. He has not yet taken competitive team snaps against starting caliber players who both want to and are allowed to pancake him into the ground if they are able. That's the next step but we haven't seen it yet. Over the next week he'll be given more of those opportunities, and we'll see what happens.

bring him up to speed slowly. he's getting good mentoring from the z man.
