Different sport, my sport, Rugby Union.

New Zealand All Blacks sacked their head coach 2 years from the World Cup.

He had a 74% win rate and ranked second in the world.

New Zealand did not feel he was getting most out of his players, felt the players were underperforming, and did not feel he could get them over the Hump to reclaim the World Cup.

Happens in pro soccer too especially EPL in England.
 
Pitt is an organization that likes to hire long term, and the fact that they hired 62 year old MM tells me that they didn't see a young up and comer that they loved and they're will sit sit out this cycle for a couple seasons and see who is out there in a couple years.

MM young enough to put at least 5 years in if not longer. If things go well you work out succession plan down the road with a young coach the team likes.

How cool it would have been to bring a young buck on stage since the draft is in Pittsburgh. Instead, we get that tub of lard to waddle on stage eating a stick of butter
