Geez, he's me if I was a WR instead of safety. Similar size and build, similar speed, he's probable a better route runner than me. I was a hurdler though, instead of a high jumper too.

Oh, and hands. I didn't have the best hands.

Might be the most impactful player we drafted this weekend.

Deep threat was sorely missed last year. Nice. Hope he is a great returner.

Now if only Arod can get over his trust issues hide)

Any word on whether this guy can run routes or if he's another Janis? many of his highlights are just use your speed and run straight down the field. Kind of like Janis, which last year wasn't enough to garner much game time.

I'm not trying to rekindle that arument.. That's more than dead. But anyone have more on this guy than what was in the highlights? Just trying to get a better feel for how he fits in.

Does Cal at least run a pro style offense? I just haven't kept up much with college this year, so i'm a bit in the dark about some of these guys.

No worry, McCarthy will let him sit and not use him anyhow..........

Not just routes with Janis - he's been a body catcher, didn't track the ball great. Don't know about this kid, how he compares, but team execs have already raved about his hands. We shall see. You have a legit 6-7 guys competing for 3-4 roster spots, should be a hell of a battle.

Thanks for that R.... That's the point of view I missed.. The difference in Janis being a body catcher and this guy better at tracking with better hands. This guy does catch the ball well....

This was the one pick that was a bit of a head-scratcher for me. I admit I never saw him play. The videos are interesting and certainly show the hands and speed, but those videos of course show only "highlights". I've been reading up on him to learn more.

Positive comments:
great speed, easily adjusts to throws, large hands and a good hands catcher, extends to bring in throws away from his body, tracks the ball well over his shoulder, decisive as a ballcarrier forcing defenders to make quick pursuit choices, scrappy in contested situations, potential as a return man specializing in kickoffs, build-up speed to challenge deep safeties from the hash, competitive runner after the catch with ability to make defenders miss and finish his runs with some authority.

Negative comments:
limited physical growth potential, rounded breaks in his patterns, needs to better set up his routes to catch defenders off balance, much better in a straight-line than moving laterally, avoids contact like it is the plague, marginal strength as a runner and blocker, lacks diversity in his route tree, wasn't a high volume receiver at Cal finishing no better than fifth on the team in catches the past two seasons, as a route-runner he has little game experience outside of drags and crosses, was rarely used on deep routes in the Bear Raid offense and was more of an option-route player, has the speed to challenge over the top but he rarely did this, requires some imagination to see him operating down the field, without the explosiveness to cut and burst on breaking routes down the field he is limited as a one-trick pony, track speed doesn't translate underneath, needs runway to get going and can't hit jets out of his breaks for separation, needs to improve hard vertical push to clear space for comebacks and outs, one-speed rounded routes need work, struggles to release cleanly against press coverage.

It seems like he has potential, but needs more coaching and maybe some strength and explosion work with the training staff. Other than having great hands, he has some Janis traits and it will be interesting to see if he can be coached to improve on his routes or yes, the MM/AR trust thing will become an issue. If you can't run the routes cleanly and be where you are supposed to be then you don't see the field much.

I love the addition of more speed. Hopefully they will find a way for he and Janis to get more snaps and stretch defenses. I do worry about the fact that in a pass-happy offense like Cal's with a high quality QB like Goff that he did not have more catches. What was the limiting factor on his seeming lack of productivity. A guy with that kind of speed and "great hands", in an offense that loves to throw the ball . . . why the mediocre numbers as a receiver.

I'll use Robert Brooks as a comparison WR. Similarly long, thin, and lanky type build. Also a star sprinter/long-jumper in high school. Hopefully Davis will have a similar career!
