In a day where hundreds of high school coaches were in town for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) this weekend, they had the opportunity to watch the Wisconsin Badgers scrimmage on Saturday.
Those in attendance had a chance to see a solid performances for two would-be redshirt freshmen in quarterback Alex Hornibrook and running back Bradrick Shaw, along with a few others. The former split time with Bart Houston with the first-team and second-team offenses, while the Alabama product saw significant time with Taiwan Deal in the backfield with both Corey Clement and Dare Ogunbowale mostly participating in position and team drills.
Good day for Hornibrook
After what many noted as a rough performance on Thursday, the West Chester, Pa. native came back with some impressive throws and an overall decent day. Below are some of the highlights from his day:
Connected with Jazz Peavy on a 25 to 30-yard completion in between traffic (seemed like three to four defenders in the area.
Hit Love during red zone team drills for a touchdown, while also completing a long pass toDerrick Tindal (yeah, he's playing both ways due to injuries at wide receiver) in what appeared to be a goal line, backed-up drills.
Hornibrook ended the day with touchdown pass to Rushing to the right corner.
Houston seemed off today, and threw a couple of interceptions. One was to safety Arrington Farrar, who nearly returned it for a touchdown. He appeared to bounce back in the last couple of drives, but was picked off when driving towards the end zone by Tindal, who along with his long reception on the offensive side of the ball, took it back for what would have been a pick-six.
Again, this was just one practice. As a former player once told me, spring camp is where questions are prompted, while fall camp is where questions are answered. Plenty of time for both to start finding more consistency.
Shaw breaks out
One play in particular jumped out for the Birmingham native. Taking a pitch from Hornibrook, he juked out the defensive back, then made one more move on another defender to stride into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. He added a one-yard score, and also improvised and made another solid run (with Houston trying to be his lead blocker, for what it's worth) from what appeared to be against the second team defense.
Other highlights
George Rushing and Peter Roy were mostly with the No. 2 offense, but both had good days.
As Galloway's stats above note, he was the leading receiver for Wisconsin, and could go a long way in competing for a place on the depth chart. Roy, a sophomore from Muskego, made the most of his opportunities with injuries to the receiving corp of late.
With Tindal getting some reps at wide receiver as well, Chryst mentioned after practice it's not entirely in stone that the Florida native will stay just on the defensive side of hte ball.
Jazz Peavy made some decent catches today, including getting one foot in on a throw from Hornibrook during team sessions along with the 30-yard completion during the scrimmage
Linebacker T.J. Edwards had a nice interception off of Houston in team drills, where he dove in front of the intended receiver, Reggie Love, full extension.
Converted linebacker Leon Jacobs received some carries as well towards the end of practice.

Looks like WI staff has slowed the game for Hornibrook and he will move into that #2 slot with ease. If they can get him some reps in game #2 and 3 I think we will be ok this yr. Of note(Per Jake) the 2nd string OL is awful in pass pro, both QB took sacks this week all of them came from the 2nd string OL.
