The three-star safety from Potomac, Md., verbally committed during an unofficial visit to Madison on Wednesday.

Potomac (The Bullis School), Md., safety/athlete Patrick Johnson committed to Wisconsin on Wednesday following an unofficial visit to Madison, he announced on Twitter.

Johnson was widely pegged as a favorite to pick to the Badgers after his visit was reported earlier this week. The three-star athlete from the Washington D.C., area also held offers from Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers and others. He had narrowed his top choices to Wisconsin, Georgia and Pitt.

A 6'0, 185-pound athlete, Johnson could be considered a replacement for Craig Watts, who decommitted from the Badgers earlier this month. Watts was a four-star safety believed to be Wisconsin's highest-rated verbal commit to ever come out of Florida and was pegged for a significant role in the Badgers' secondary, which will lose seven or so defensive backs after this season.

In comes Johnson, however, who holds the following rankings from the top scouting services:

  • 247Sports: Three stars; 0.8457 rating; No. 719 overall; No. 51 athlete; No. 21 Maryland
  • 247 Sports (composite): Three stars; No. 926 overall; No. 66 athlete; No. 25 Maryland
  • Rivals: Three stars; No. 25 Maryland
  • Scout: Three stars; No. 34 safety; No. 3 Maryland safety

I'm proud to announce that I'm committed to the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN #OnWisconsin ⚪pic.twitter.com/cEXAwFhZrd

Johnson is the 15th commitment for Wisconsin's 2016 class and the second this week, joining Tampa (Robinson), Fla. defensive end Keldric Preston, who committed on Monday.
