Summer is heating up in the Midwest and the Badgers are heating up on the recruiting trail as well. After getting three-star athlete Jaylan Franklin out of Michigan to commit on Monday, UW earned its second commit of the week on Wednesday morning. That commitment came from three-star cornerback Alexander Smith, who becomes the first cornerback to come out of California in the 247Sports composite...

If the Badgers want to be at the top of the heap, they need guys who have enough height to challenge these taller receivers we see in Big 10 schools. The newer rules, about pass interference, pretty much eliminated defenders using taller guys as ladders, to get to the ball.

In the future, we might see guys as tall as 6-6 being CBs. Shooting guard types, swing man types, out of college basketball.

Maybe, you tend to not have the hip flexibility and speed and agility while going backwards at that hight.

Mr. Smith comes to Madison - nice! It is nice to see a taller guy at CB, but those guys with the combination of size, speed, feet and hips are kinda rare. You'd love to have a bunch of Troy Vincents, but sometimes you have to be happy with the Jamar Fletchers. Sure the new wave of taller receivers will cause you some problems, but the majority of college QBs aren't accurate enough to take advantage of those shorter CBs.

You're absolutely right. It would be guys who are kind of "freaks of nature" by today's standards, but it will eventually happen. I look back to when WRs weren't all that tall. There have been about 40 guys @ 6-1 or more that have made the grade over the years, and only Harold Charmichael was 6-8. Most were 6-0 or under, because they said bigger guys couldn't make the cuts, and weren't quick enough in initial acceleration. Of those 40, I'd say about half of them have come along over the last 20 years.

There have only been about 35 CBs over 6-0 tall. But, we're seeing increased height in WRs at college level, which is going to force colleges to convert those taller WRs with bad hands into CBs, if possible.

The ever changing face of football. I remember when they thought a defensive line, or offensive line, that weighed an average of 250# was about right. Now it's 50 to 70# more. Guys are huge!
