Myles Jack, LB, UCLA

Ht: 6’1 Wt: 245lbs

Positives-

  • Great build for Inside Linebacker, adequate height and good bulk
  • Lines up inside/outside, left/right side, at Cornerback out wide or in the slot, or on the edge on the LOS. (Has even played Running Back)
  • Excels in man coverage, re-directs receivers at the line
  • Good hip transitions when flipping them to run with receivers
  • Looks comfortable in zone, will keep his head moving looking for receivers in his area
  • Elite athleticism, can run with Wide Receivers
  • Very good at diagnosing plays, quick to react to screens
  • Displays a quick burst when blitzing inside
  • Understands gap integrity and aggressively takes on blocks

Exceptional job reading this underneath crossing route and great athleticism to chase it down and prevent a first down. (I disagree with it being an illegal horse collar tackle)

Does nicely reading the underneath route and closing in a hurry to make the big hit. This is a man’s play.

Negatives-

  • Can take a poor angle from time to time
  • Needs to work on disengaging from blockers
  • Will occasionally take a false step when trying to read a play
  • Doesn’t look as comfortable reading plays while playing on the inside, will sometimes hesitate
  • Tore meniscus in knee in September

Jack does a decent job reading this play but he gets sucked in just a little too far and loses contain on the outside. He does showcase athleticism to keep it a minimal gain.

Overall- Myles Jack is an intriguing prospect who can do a ton of things to help a football team. UCLA had him line up just about everywhere on defense which certainly shows his versatility and athletic ability. In my opinion this may have hurt some of his development on playing Linebacker, which is what he’ll play in the NFL. Jack has all the traits you look for in a Linebacker at the next level, great physique, excellent agility, and very physical. There were times when Jack was playing in the box he was a bit hesitant trying to read a play but with more reps I think he could learn to trust his eyes and be a difference maker. Along with being sound vs the run by understanding his gap integrity and containment he exhibited the exceptional cover skills. He showed a great jam at the line of scrimmage and the ability to ride the hip pocket of receivers down the field. Jack is very comfortable in space and has the athleticism to match up with just about anyone. Jack I think would be best as a OLB in a 4-3 but could also be a very good ILB in a 3-4. Jack is someone who could stay on the field all three downs with his ability in coverage.

Projection: 1st round

If we miss out on the playoffs...this guy could make it worth it. Not only is he a playmaker, he fits a huge need on this team. His injury might put him within reach for us. This kid has the talent we've been missing out on drafting in the late 20s every year. Big thumbs up!
