Packers coach Mike McCarthy speaks with press ahead of training camp

On Monday, Green Bay's headman made this first media appearance of training camp.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media to open up training camp, which formally kicks off Tuesday. McCarthy didn't reveal much new information, though the team may have an unexpected position battle on offense.

· McCarthy declined to discuss players returning from injury such as Jordy Nelson, though he revealed plans to address that topic on Tuesday.

· The coaching staff regards both Corey Linsley and JC Tretter as starting-caliber linemen. However, McCarthy refused to say whether that meant the two would compete for the starting center job.

· No discussions have taken place between McCarthy and linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers regarding the NFL's ongoing PED investigation.

· McCarthy took some time to praise former Packers wideout Greg Jennings, who announced his retirement from the NFL Monday. The Green Bay head coach highlighted some of Jennings' big plays in Super Bowl XLV.

· Aaron Rodgers, who famously ditched dairy products this offseason, apparently reported in the "best shape [McCarthy has] seen him in." Teams always say this about their players, and Rodgers has always taken good care of himself.

· McCarthy expressed confidence that Rodgers and Nelson can fully reclaim their chemistry and rhythm on the field.

· When asked about what the staff plans to do to repair the offense, McCarthy said the Packers need to better practice and teach their fundamentals. "We clearly addressed that. We need to improve on a number of things fundamentally, that's what we're going to do.
