Packers 2023-24 Season Thread

Agree. GB often will overpay guys to keep them. Once Rodgers is gone I fully expect this team to pull a Chicago Bears take a large cap hit in a season by cutting or trading everyone who has a large cap number so in the following season you have a lot of cap space and be clear of those bad deals.
But don't have too, cut fat over 3 years and stop holding on 2 seasons too long or refusing to cut bait on your mistakes. They put themselves in this spot.

Athletic reporter who wrote story about Russ Wilson wanting Pete Carroll fired was on mad dog sports radio today.

She said Hacketts downfall with Russ was that when he came in he wanted peace with Russ and wanted to accommodate his preferences too much. Said Russ was constantly changing hand signals and wanting to implement too much for a first year offense. Said Hackett gave Russ his own office not on the first floor where the players hang..but the second floor where management hangs. Hackett said there was real tension Year one in GB with Rodgers, Lafleur, and Hackett over Rodgers resistance to Lafleurs offense.

She said Hackett wanted to avoid that tension by accommodating russ fully and he simply went way too far, lost all control, and put his fate in a struggling QBs hands to the detriment of the full team.

Makes me wonder if Rodgers play in year one wasn’t why Love was drafted, but Rodgers being a pain in the a** and resisting the coach was the reason Love was drafted. Made me also think how Hackett and Lafleur bending knee to 12 year one, led to hacketts quick downfall in Denver. Anyway it was an interesting interview

According to

: "The #Packers were working on reducing nose tackle Kenny Clark’s cap number of $23.9 million with either a restructure or extension, and left tackle David Bakhtiari’s $28.79 million cap number with a restructure, a source said."

Bak should be told he has to take contract based on roster bonus with active games or get cut.

I don't believe these restructures tell us anything other than the CAP was/is a mess and space needed to be opened up no matter which way things go with AR. If he's back, he counts a bunch against the CAP. If he's traded, he counts a bunch against the CAP. If he retires, he still has a pretty major CAP hit. Bottom line, it tells us almost nothing other than that they were way over the CAP and had to do something. What it does tell us is the Rodgers contract was a mistake and forced them to do a bunch of CAP tricks.

They need to kick the can down the road for a year or two until the AR contract is gone. At the same time it's highly likely Bahk, Jones, Savage, PSmith and others will come off the books. Combine that with a rising CAP and they should be OK from a CAP point of view in a year or two.

Most likely if you have #12 come back for 2023 you will likely trade/cut several guys with post june 1st cuts before the 2024 season so you will push dead money into 2025 season so 2026 could be 1st season without any big dead cap. Only big contracts that could maybe be on the books would be Alexander, Gary, Love, and Watson.
