That's the way it should be. Glad they don't just give the position to a guy just because 'he's been there'. Gunter has been a pleasant surprise. Hope he keeps it going. He looks like a very nice UDFA. Good job getting him signed.

According to PFF, Gunter has the highest grade of any rookie so far this preseason. Pretty impressive for a UDFA. It will be interesting to see how snaps are handled as the season goes on. Practice is now closed to the public but these guys will continue to grow behind the scenes, and if any current starter isn't getting the job done they may find themselves on the bench.

The rookies will challenge Hayward. I suspect one of them, most likely Randall or Gunter takes the starting job from him by mid-season and Hayward will return to his nickel spot.
