The University of Wisconsin men’s track & field team has a long and storied history, but on Wednesday it added Olympic history to its honor roll as well.

Evan Jager, a former Badgers runner, took silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and in the process became the first USA athlete to medal in the event since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games.

It was an intense race, with Jager hanging at the front of the pack from the first lap on. He even held a lead heading in to the final lap. However Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya had an amazing final kick during the last lap and was able to coast to the finish line with Jager giving chase over the final 200 meters from third position.

A United States men’s athlete hasn’t won this event since the 1952 Olympics and while Jager couldn’t get it done on this day, a medal for the former Badgers star is certainly an impressive feat.
