Cheese Curds, 5/9: Three Packers rookies head back to college as minicamp concludes

Green Bay will miss nearly half of its draft class over the next month due to an NFL rule.

The NFL has some puzzling rules, but one that can have an impact on a player's rookie year is the requirement that players who are still enrolled in school may only participate in rookie minicamp as long as their college's term is in session. For a few players who attend schools on the quarter system, which typically run through early June, that means that unless they graduate early, they will have to miss most of OTAs and the spring offseason program.

That is the case for three of the Green Bay Packers' seven draft picks this year, most notably their top selection. It seems that Pac-12 schools are some of the last ones to work on the quarter system instead of on semesters, and so with the Packers drafting several Pac-12 players, it is more of an issue this year than most.

Last year, wide receiver Ty Montgomery had the same issue but was able to absorb the playbook well during his time away and assimilated into the offense quickly in training camp. That means that this may not be an issue for these three rookies in 2016, but they will need to do their homework and keep up with their workouts while they are back in California.
