Our View: Few players the Badgers sign today will have gone through what Luke Benzschawel and his Grafton team did in 2015. Despite having a big time player involved on both sides of the ball, Grafton went just 2-7 on the season.

It wasn’t for a lack of Benzschawel’s effort though, and that should be the biggest takeaway about this player. The fact that he didn’t sink with a team that was going through tough times speaks to not only his talent but his character.

The question for Benzschawel going forward is where he plays on the field. The film indicates a player who is physical, but probably too slow to take on tight end duties at the collegiate level. Wisconsin is going to start him out at defensive end, where the 3-4 defense requires long, lean players on the outside. Benzschawel is all of that and add in his work ethic it could be very interesting to see if/when he makes an impact on this roster.

Wisconsin has been stockpiling all sorts of different looking talent along the defensive line in the last few years and Benzschawel’s height and arm-length allow UW to better hide blitzing linebackers and play more varied-looking fronts in the future.
