Packers Playbook Undergoes Changes, but we are not starting from Scratch.

he thing that I hate as a pet peeve, is Tuesday night in the middle of a season, you're trying to figure out, 'Well, what am I going to call this formation?’ Oh my gosh,” Philbin said. “Now we feel we've got a system in place where we can virtually line up anybody anywhere. And how much we do that, that might depend week to week. But we don't have to sit around and call it 'Oh that's Viking Right' because we're playing in Minnesota, and then next week it's 'St. Louis Left' … even though I guess St. Louis doesn't have a team anymore.

But this SAYS IT ALL >>
...ultimately, Hostler said, the goal is for the offense — despite all the alterations — to look essentially the same as it always has on Sunday when Rodgers is under center. Because he’s the one who makes it what it is. .

Last year's failure with Hundley had me wondering if perhaps MM had designed an offense that only Rodgers can run. I wonder if that is part of the reason for this change, making it possible for the backup to run it. sh))

Last year had me wondering if MM can't groom an adequate backup.

My thought when they brought back Philbin, same as my thought when he left to become a head coach, was that Philbin wasn't a real O Coordinator when he was with the Packers at all. McCarthy basically handled that role himself, just leaving Philbin with a few scraps.

I tend to doubt Philbin would just sign on for a repeat of that sort of thing. I'm assuming he told McCarthy "I'll only come back if I can run things like a real O.C." If that's true, we'll see if he's really any good. If he ain't, maybe we will see Ol' Mike take back the job like he did when whatshisname called plays for a while a few years ago.

Hundley falling on his face was a disaster for the entire organization. Top to bottom.
But McCarthy's calling cards are QB development and game plans/calls. It on him directly AND as the manager of the coaching staff.

I'm not as certain Philbin is a nobody. I look back at how he orchestrated the unity of the offense, and it was pretty decent. What I saw was how it fell apart immediately after he left.

We'll let this year's results speak for who is and isn't right, because there's been so darned many questions as to how McCarthy actually manages this team.

What makes me believe you could be right is the fact that he tends to want to be a micro-manager.

I don't think any OC since Philbin had MM's trust and being his macho Pittsburgh self- he turned to micro managing. Philbin had more than just scraps when he was here before. I think he was the guy who got the players to 'buy in' to the scheme and game plan on a weekly basis. I think his communication skills were never replaced. MM started taking credit and his ego overwhelmed any vision the players would buy into. Just speculation though, too many intangibles to pinpoint. Just hoping that with Philbin's return ARod has someone to listen to who is more concerned with the offense's execution than their image of a 'pretty successful NFL coach'. ;)

I'm not sure how MM ever earned those calling cards. He has never been that great at it. You could see that any time he didn't have Arod, with very few exceptions.

Mm seems to be once again betting everything on Arod being able to be Superman again with a bunch of young, raw WR, questionable OL and depth, and TEs who are on the downsides of their careers.

I'm not sure how the heck with all the personnel changes and such he can try and run the same offense.

Don't forget philbin had a pretty darn good group of WR to work with. A group that GB hasn't even come close to replacing talent wise. Plus a much better OL, and better RBs, etc...

This will sound crazy, but..... I think we remember things better than they were. Better? maybe, but WR was really the only position that was much better. OL- It was the last two years of LT Clifton's career, but I think Bak is better. LG Colledge started in '10 and was replaced with Lang in '11 (he was unproven yet) Taylor is pretty solid. Scott Wells and Linsley are almost identical. Sitton vs our empty RG position is clear winner. RT was Tauscher in '10 replaced by rookie Bulaga in '11 vs hurt Bulaga/Spriggs. There were question marks on both groups. WR is no contest with Jennings, Driver,Jones and Jordy vs Adams, Cobb and ??????. RBs though I think favors the present with Grant and Starks back in 10 and 11. I like A Jones, Williams and Monty more.
Rodgers had a tremendous playoff run, but I think he is better now too.
I just hope that AFTER this year we might remember it better than looking forward with the question marks.
Just kicking stuff around, but I think we have 'potential' this year, whether it is realized or not is the elephant in the room. That's Philbin's job this year- to realize that potential.
