Official 2016 Green Bay vs San Francisco Preseason Game Thread

We don't seem to have a lot of luck when it comes to new defensive linemen. It seems like a lot of them end up injured and having very little camp time before their first season starts. They end up a liability for the first half of the season.

Just once I'd like to see one come in and end up being dynamite when the season starts.
You and me both.

How often does that happen with rookie DL though? JJ Watt and Aaron Donald are the exceptions, vast majority of these guys, even highly touted ones, need a year or two to adjust. It's gotta be the most demanding position between body size/type and brute physicality. Their bodies need to adjust. I'm not really frustrated with Clark, it's more on TT for not properly stocking the shed.

I'll go first. Someone has to be the first to be kicked around! bh(

Gannon said Callahan reminded him of Doug Flutie in some ways. He also said he would have been drafted if he was 3 inches taller. I agree. He's not tall. Has problems seeing over linemen. But I do remember Flutie, and how he thumbed his nose at all his distractors for so many years. He threw for nearly 15,000 yards, and had over 80 TD passes. Not bad for a guy 5-10 wearing high heels! Callahan is 6-1.

If the Packers cut him and try to stash him on the practice squad, someone is going to grab this kid. He has arm strength, and can put a ball to a receiver on a line, when he wants. As often as Hundley is injured, I'd make sure this guy was on the 53 man roster. Eventually he could end up being the back-up, and could end up starting the season in that position.

Adams still catches the ball with boxing gloves on. Abby can stretch for the ball, makes catches. Montgomery is a big question mark. Wish I knew the answer. Davis is fast, but I saw him go down with a hand swipe. He needs to get stronger if he wants to play in this league. Still, I think they keep him, or at least try to stash him on the practice squad.

Barclay plays all five offensive line positions. That's the one thing that will keep him on the roster. We have some darned good young offensive linemen who should make this roster who are going to get cut. Expect two or three to end up on someone else's roster.

I wish I really understood what McCarthy's idea is on judging WRs. He has guys that need field time and they sit. I guess he's trying to sort out who's at the bottom of the list for the first cut. I don't like the look of what's happening for Abbrederis. They need to decide if Jeff Janis is going to be a part of this team during the first half of the season. If not, stash him on IR, and look to him next year. This would make it easy keeping Davis, and finding out if he can add weight and strength.

Gannon said it best. "Linebackers just aren't fast enough to cover TEs in the open field." Of course he was referring to our linebackers because of their size. I understand that. What I don't understand is why they don't check the tight ends at the line of scrimmage, to knock them off their routes before they start. This would make guys like Barrington and Blake Martinez (whom I believe will be our top ILB by game 5), impact players.

Speaking of Martinez. Does he let anyone else make plays or does he think he owns the game? Throws his body around a lot like a guy who came into the league a few years ago, named Matthews. Has that same mentality, and reads plays well. Not saying he's that good, just saying he plays with the same intensity. Also plays smart.

Announcers said something I agree with. There's a lot of guys the Packers are going to cut who will make other rosters. I think that's true. They have some darned good talent out there competing for jobs.

I like what I see, but I'm not going to go out and buy a bottle of champagne yet to celebrate them visiting Houston for another Lombardi Trophy. I just hope I don't want to buy a couple cases of two-buck chuck to wash my sorrow away if they lose their way during the season.

The way both MM and ARod sing Abby's praises (and the amount of playing time he got last night) I'll be surprised if he gets cut.

I'm not sure what they will do about Janis. Although he's not all that great at practice he has made some plays in games.

But with the broken hand he hasn't gotten any game work in to show that he would be an asset in some fashion. I wouldn't be totally surprised....if they are confident in their special teams' guys, that he gets cut.

For some reason I am still pulling for him. Hate to see him go somewhere else and do well. We'll see.

Janis and Adams are all about expectations. Adams, being a 2nd round pick, is suffering from elevated expectations. He must really shine in practice and has made a couple of really nice plays this preseason, but it is expected- so he doesn't really get credit. Janis, 7th(?) round pick, is not expected to do much. More athlete than football player. Doesn't seem to be where he needs to be majority of the time. Good special teams player, but the Packers usually reserve that 'Special' spot for a DB. Montgomery? Is now the biggest mystery at the position. Haven't seen or heard hardly anything about him????

Barclay cannot play 5 positions on the OL. He proved that over and over. The only way he makes the team is if Linsley starts on the PUP list. If Barclay is on the team for any other reason, we haven't improved. IMO.

With our perceived strengths at WR and DBs, any chance TT makes a move to land a DL? Adams and/or Hyde? I like them both, but they fit the bill for having value and being replaceable as far as the roster goes.

I like Janis for special teams, no matter if he can contribute as a WR regularly or not. The problem is, with a club on his hand he'd no good at all as a WR and can't return kicks so he's useless as a WR and now limited for ST duty. I actually would not be surprised if they IR'd him and made him eligible to return.

They have some decent young speed guys who can probably work as gunners in Evans and Brice. Abby, Hyde and Davis can handle returns for now. Heck, even Cobb could handle some return duty if absolutely necessary.

I'd love to see them keep both Brice and Evans as they have both played well in pre-season and are that rare combination of speed and willingness to mix it up in the box, but it probably would mean cutting Banjo, and that guy is just too valuable on special teams. You'll likely have to cut one or the other and hope like heck you can sneak one onto the PS, but I suspect you won't be able to.

Man those last 5-6 cuts are going to be really tough this year. Guys like Brice, Evans, Allison, Lane Taylor, Joe Thomas, Bradford, Dorleant, Hawkins, and maybe even a few others are going to figure to be in that last group of 10 or so guys and you'll only be able to keep about half of them.

I agree on Barclay but what you and I think doesn't matter. McCarthy and his staff think the guy can play them all, and that was even stated by the announcers because it was part of their "information kit" that they should pass along during the game. I wouldn't even keep him until the 2nd cut to be honest.

But, as I said, what we think doesn't matter. It's all in the eyes of the coaching staff.
