I might have to say it came with the knowledge our unique little franchise took 600k from the government to put on patriotic displays at Lambeau Field. Disgraceful.

As I read the story, I was shocked the Packers were on the list of 14 teams who took that money and ranked 6th out of the 14.

There should be some statement released from our organization on why they did such a thing? I realize the government was offering "free" money but, still, do the right thing and just say no to it and do the displays because you think they mean something and matter not because you're being compensated.

Our org looks really really pitiful. Very embarrassing.

Just to get it out of the way, I'm retired military and spent 15 months in the Vietnam theater.

As with any news story, we need all the facts. For one thing, the Packers have backed off considerably in the funds received, from $400K in '11 to $150K in '12, to $50K in '14. I don't know if that means they're re-evaluating their involvement, but it's a good trend.

It takes two to tango, and it's entirely possible that the Packers were going to present something patriotic, anyhow, when here comes an outside agency with a check to cover all or part of it. I'd have to think on it a bit before I could say for sure if I, in a business situation, would have done differently.

Since I see that the ultimate payer is the Department of Defense, but the subset is mostly Army, with some Air Force, I would assume that the funds probably come out of the military's public relations/advertising budget and might otherwise have been spent sponsoring race cars or other questionable enterprises. If I'd just read the story and had no outside commentary, I might have just figured it was the DoD just looking for the biggest bang for their buck - "hey, sports teams, can we use your venue to promote patriotism, since you have more people watching than any other show - we'll pay for part of it".

No way I don't see your concern, and in a little better world, there would be much more voluntary spending by businesses for patriotic shows, as well as help to deserving veterans and other needy folks, and worthy non-profits, etc. However, I've found that there's a lot more behind the running of many of the non-profits at which I volunteer than meets the eye, and all I ask for is some considered investigation and thought. If you feel the same way after that, I certainly wouldn't stand in your way.

yeah, i would at least want to know - did the packers go to the military and say "hey give us some money and we will put on a great patriotic display" or did the military approach the packers organization with a fistful of dollars and say "hey we like the wholesome all-american image that your organization projects. would you guys be willing to do some promotional events for the military and promote patriotism? by the way we can help cover the expense".

but i can remember even forty and fifty years ago the military has always looked for ways to promote patriotism at sporting events, and none of those efforts are free. there's at the very least transportation and operating costs involved. i think various branches of the military have been sponsoring auto racing teams since i was a little kid. i'm not sure i understand why this is all of a sudden a thing.

to answer the question in the title of the thread - my lowest point would have to be when the packers team had a total meltdown and managed to lose the championship game to the seahawks last season. i honestly thought that was what this thread was going to be about.

I'm right there with you on the lowest point. I may have to throw the loss to Denver as a very very close second. As for the initial post for the thread, I'm not sure I can get angry with the Packers. Yes, they took money to put on a display but did they pocket most of it or spend it on the promotion? I would like to see more details on this before I get to upset.

Sounds like not a big deal as the national guard was getting in stadium advertising also got field passes along with game tickets so pretty much guard is paying an advertising fee.

As to the apparent thread topic - certainly tough to keep last year and the second Favre SB out of the discussion. I'd add the 2011 season - even though I was preaching caution because of the defense, I figured the humiliating, late streak-ending loss to KC was enough to get them fired up for the playoff run. For us old guys, even one of the Glory Years was a bummer. '64 not so much, as they just had a down year, but in '63, they were coming off a lose-the-championship, win-it-all, win-it-all streak, went 11-2-1, and watched from the stands. Winning the tie wouldn't have changed things, as guess to whom the losses were - yup, the Bears. '60-'67 is why I always bristle at the current fans who tell me how lucky I am to see the Pack in the playoffs most years.

Don't know about low point... But I grew up in NE as a Patriots fan. My wife is from WI... Low point for me and the Packers was the 97 Superbowl win. Because I had to listen to my then girlfriend (now wife) gloat about it.... It was torture.... br)

My low point was Vince Lombardi retiring when I was a kid. I totally did not understand it. Then a year later he goes to the Redskins. I felt betrayed. That of course led to 25 years of low points.

More recently, last season's loss to the SeaHawks, the Super Bowl loss to Denver, and the playoff loss to the Giants in Favre's last season were low points and some days I'd be hard pressed to pick the worst, but listed them in the order of how I felt about them today.

I understand the disappointment, but this less about the NFL teams and more about how the military is using taxpayer money for advertising purposes...
